October 3-7 | Starting at $500TROOPER
Equestrian Paintings from Lincoln Land
The McClellan saddle became the U.S. military standard during the Civil War. It was used by troopers like Custer and Patton, by Buffalo Soldiers and Rough Riders, by the Horse Marines in China, and by mounted police in American cities. In 2025, it was retired from the Old Guard’s funerary caisson at Arlington National Cemetery.
As the saddle moved from the Civil War into an imperial role, it was painted by Winslow Homer and later by Frederic Remington as they crafted national images.
These paintings are of a 1904 McClellan saddle I bought off the son of a Chicago mounted police officer. I rode this kind of saddle myself as a teenager, reenacting U.S. Civil War cavalry battles.
The paintings come from seeing this saddle here and now.
